Bible Study

The rich young ruler story is a familiar one to all Christians challenging our core value and our true intention and action to follow Jesus.

N. T. Wright has a very good catch on this:
Jesus' basic demand is not for some logic-chopping extra observance, some tightening of definition here, some sharpening of exact meaning there. It is for idols and covetousness to be thrown to the winds: sell up and give to the poor! ... The discussion that follows the rich man's sad departure reflects the disciples' shock at being told that wealth won't buy you a place in the Age to Come. ..Riches can no more go into the Age to Come than a camel can go through a needle a typical and deliberate overstatement, like saying 'you'll get your riches into God's kingdom when you can put the entire ocean into a bottle'. Everything will be upside down and inside out; all things are possible to God; the first will be last and the last first. In particular, though, those who have left family and possessions to follow Jesus will receive things back even in the Present Age - a new and ever-enlarging family of their fellow-disciples, with homes open to them wherever they go; and, of course, in the Age to Come.

What have you got from Jesus today? Do you have a new understanding in idols and covetousness? What is actually blocking you from truly following Jesus?

Have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to God as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

What I heard from Jesus today is: An invitation!

Yes, this is what I got from Jesus today - an invitation! Invitation of what? An invitation from Jesus to you of how you need to have a Kingdom view to the use of your wealth. And an invitation from Jesus to truly follow Him and not just saying following Him but only following your wealth but not Him!

What is your response?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to be able to throw our idols and covetousness into the wind so that we can follow you. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
