Yesterday's passage Paul talks about how we can experience justification by faith. Today's passage Paul talks about why the Jews were not saved. Because they did all those evil things they led other people, they taught other people and they warned other people not to do, but they did all those.

     Bishop N.T. Wright says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright):

When Paul quotes Isaiah 52:5(echoing, also, Ezekiel 36:20 and 23) in verse 24, he is drawing on the very centre of the prophets' critique of Israel.  This critique was so damaging that the same prophets could only see the future in terms of total judgment and reconstitution.  Israel had not just made a few mistakes.  Israel had failed completely in the task God set her.  The only way, now, was for God to send a Messiah who would take upon himself the effect of that failure, and, through him, would establish a new covenant. Isaiah 52 goes on, just a few verses later, to introduce the figure of the Suffering Servant who would die for the sins of Israel and the world.  Ezekiel 36 goes on to talk of a new covenant in which God will write his law on people's hearts.  Paul clearly has both themes in mind.

Surely Israel had failed completely in the task God set her. How about we as Christians? How about you?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

What I heard from Jesus today is: How can we do all those evil things we tell others not to do?

What I got today from Jesus is a challenge. A challenge whether we are one of those Jews and Christians who do all those evil things we tell others not to do.

     What is your answer?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to become a true and faithful disciple of you that we won't do all those evil things we tell others not to do. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
