Bible Study

Today's passage finish off the previous chapters' argument that the whole human race is being found guilty. No exception! We are all guilty!

Bishop N.T. Wright's says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright):

Verse 9 picks up from the rapid-fire discussion in the previous section, which Paul may realize has left some of his listeners gasping for breath, and in effect repeats the question of verse 1: are Jews in fact better off than Gentiles? No, he replies; because I have already placed a charge against both groups.  Not only are Jews, as well as Gentiles, guilty of sin; worse, they are under its power.
This introduces another major theme of this letter. 'Sin' is not only an act of wrongdoing; it is a power with, we might dare to say, a life of its own.

N.T. Wright. Paul for Everyone: Romans:Part12. Louisville,KY:Westminster John Knox Press, 2004, p.49.

So, do you agree that we are all guilty? Are we all under the slavery of the power of sin that we can't get away?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

What I heard from Jesus today is: Can you get away from the power of sin?

What I got today from Jesus is a question you may not think of or may disagree. How come sin is so powerful and has its own life? Impossible!

Then, why Paul says that we as human beings are all guilty? Do you think you have the power against the power of sin? Not a single chance!

Unless, you have someone more powerful than the power of sin. Who is more powerful than the power of sin? Paul gives the answer in tomorrow's passage. Anyway, you should know the answer, right?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to understand that we do not have the power to overcome the power of sin as a human being. Help us to understand that without you we have no way out.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
