Today's passage is again not easy to understand, but Bishop N.T. Wright uses the prodigal son story to simplify these five verses.

Bishop N.T. Wright's says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright):

Now come forward a year or two, and imagine a thought stealing unbidden into the young man's mind.  Life has settled down to a reasonably humdrum existence again.  His older brother tolerates having him around, more or less; his father is getting older.  He remembers with a happy sigh the day he came up the road and his father came running to greet him...And he thinks, supposing I did it again?  Why not help myself to enough things to survive, run away for a few weeks, and then play the penitent and come back again?  Maybe I'll get another party...
Once you are baptized, of course, you can try to shirk or shrug off your new responsibilities.  You can pretend you don't after all have a new status...But what you can't do is get unbaptized again.  Don't even think of trying to go back to Egypt.  Better think carefully about who you now are, and set off for the promised land.

N.T. Wright. Paul for Everyone: Romans:Part12. Louisville,KY:Westminster John Knox Press, 2004, p.98,102.

There are quite a number of Christians who keep on playing the role of the prodigal son. But, how many times can we play? How many times have you played this role? Are you still playing this role?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

Spiritual Journal

What I heard from Jesus today is: How many times could you play the role of the prodigal son?

What I got from Jesus today is to remind us the reality of how weak Christians really are. People just keep on sinning, keep on playing the prodigal son's role and never can come into senses to become a loving father. Sad!

How many times could you play the role of the prodigal son? How can you help more people not going back to Egypt to play this role again and again?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us not to play the role of prodigal son again and again. Help us to be able to help more people to come into their senses not playing this role again but to become a loving father following your good example. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
