Bible Study

Peter gives warning to this readers about all those false teachers around them. You need to know it is not easy to discern who are the false teachers because they can do a good job to make people believe that they are good teachers and be willing to follow them and leave their own churches or even their Christian faith.

Let's take a look at what Bishop N.T. Wright says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :

When teachers emerge who remove the normal restraint that Christian faith had imposed on human desires, we should beware. The deadly combination at which he points in verse 10a has a sharper focus: 'those who follow after the pollution of fleshly lust and despise authority.'  It would be a bold person who claimed that no such problems existed in today's church.  It is easy to get on the wrong road - easier than you might think.
The underlying point, though, is the positive one, and Peter states it clearly in verse 9.  You are not left to your own devices.  Yes, you will be tested, and yes, wicked and unscrupulous people will appear to flourish.  But God is not mocked.  He knows how to rescue his people from the test.  And he knows how to deep the wicked ready for the day of judgment.

So, you have a better understanding to discern who are the false teachers? Is it possible that you are following a false teacher now? How do you know?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

The title I heard from Jesus today is: Don't follow the wrong leader

The message I got from Jesus today is a life or death question. Why? Because if you are following a false teacher then you are going to be led away from the authentic faith and the body of Christ.

A brother told me a few months ago when we talk about following false teachers. He said, "It is not difficult for me to discern who are the false teachers. It is from their fruit, whether they have the fruit of the Holy Spirit. They can talk about lots of good things but if they do not have the fruit of the Spirit, no matter how beautiful they say, I won't follow."

Well said. And, Peter has one more key message for us to discern who are the false teachers: "Those who despise authority". I am a bishop, but I am under authority. I have my Apostolic Vicar, Bishop Philip Jones as the head of Anglican Mission in the Americas and my leader. We have our College of Consultants of three Archbishops and two bishops. And, we are under the authority and license of nine Anglican bishops from nine authentic Anglican Provinces.

So, how is your leader be willing to under authority or to despise authority?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to have the ability to discern the false teachers and prophets so that we are not going to follow false teachers and prophets. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
