Bible Study

John concludes this letter with one important message. As in Bishop N.T. Wright's translation of verse 18:
Everyone fathered by God does not go on sinning.

Let's take a look at what Bishop N.T. Wright says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
It is the continuous habit of life that here concerns John.  Clearly he would rather one did not sin at all, but occasional sins, a blip on the chart as it were, can be prayed for, can be confessed and forgiven.  They are quite different from the hard-hearted sin which carries on regardless, and which, as in Romans 1.32, even comes to see the action in question as not sinful at all….
Part of the victory which consists in faith (5.4) is believing that Jesus has in fact defeated all the powers that might endanger us, and that we are 'in him', and so 'in the truth' as opposed to being 'in the lie', the lie of which the world has done its best to persuade us.

N.T. Wright. The Early Christian Letters for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2011, p.169.

Do you have a habit of keep on sinning? If so, are you truly fathered by God?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

Spiritual Journal

The title I heard from Jesus today is: Fathered by God, won't keep on sinning

The message I got from Jesus today is a lifelong question checking whether we are truly fathered by God, or fathered by all kinds of things but not God.

The answer is not complicated. Because if we are truly fathered by God, then we should have created a habit, a lifestyle of Christlikeness, a habit of not keep on sinning and be able to become holy.

Dear Lord Jesus,
Thank you for fathering us each day that we would not going to keep on sinning but to become an image-bearer of yours, a true witness of Christlikeness. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
