Bible Study

John writes this letter to a church in the form of a family letter. In Chinese translation, the "chosen lady" is being translated as "chosen wife". Why John wrote like that?

Let's take a look at what Bishop N.T. Wright says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
Why John referred to them in this way we can only guess, but the best guess is that danger was at hand, and the more he could make the opening and closing of the letter look like an ordinary message within a family, the safer he and his readers might be.
But the point of what he is saying in this first part of the letter is that he has seen the vital signs, the signs of life, in some members of this other church.  He is delighted (verse 4) because he has 'found some of your children walking in the truth.'  This, indeed, is the major theme of the first part of this short letter, as the introduction makes clear, mentioning 'truth' no fewer than four times in three verses.
But what (as Pontius Pilate famously asked Jesus) is 'truth'?  For John it is very simple, and very profound.  At one level 'truth' simply means 'Jesus the Messiah as the full revelation of God the father'… Then, as the key 'sign of life' he finds some members of the other church who are 'walking in the truth', who are behaving in accordance with the truth.

N.T. Wright. The Early Christian Letters for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2011, p.174-175.

Do you know Jesus is the Truth? Are you walking with Jesus and that is in the Truth?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

Spiritual Journal

The title I heard from Jesus today is: Not only knowing, but walking in the truth

The message I got from Jesus today is a spiritual vital sign examination which means whether we are spiritually alive or dead. According to John, there are two signs:
1. Whether we know Jesus
2. Whether we are walking with Jesus

Do you know what you have to do to know Jesus? Do you know what you have to do when you need to walk with Jesus and live out what He commands?

Yes, of course you know! The problem is most of us do not have the time or the willingness to know more, not to do what Jesus wants us not to do and to do what Jesus want us to do, right? After all, what John always points out is just one word: love. Jesus wants us to be in His love and for us to be able to love.

How do you respond to Jesus call today?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to know you more and to do what you command us to do more and more each day. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
