Bible Study

There were quite a number of false teachers and false prophets in John's time. Especially a kind of religious movement to be known as 'gnosticism'. It is a kind of religion that specialized in secret 'knowledge' (gnosis), thinking that by having this knowledge one can escape from the physical world, and enter into a pure spirit. This kind of darkness confused lots of Christians giving them fear and doubt. John tells them the way of how to get rid of their fear and doubt so that they can stand firm on their faith.

Let's take a look at what Bishop N.T. Wright says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
The sense of discovering that the forces with us are greater than the forces on the other side, despite initial appearances, comes again and again in scripture, and what John says here is one more instance.  It always takes faith to see and know this reality, of course.  Like Peter trying to walk on the water, it's all too easy to begin to doubt, and then we're in trouble.  But, as John says here (verse 4), 'the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world'.  He has already warned us against loving 'the world'.  Now we see something of the inner reality of 'the world', and how it goes to work.  But we also see, more powerfully, the reality of God's presence with us, giving us the strength to overcome.

N.T. Wright. The Early Christian Letters for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2011, p.154.

In the midst of confusion and darkness, how can you experience 'the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world'?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

The title I heard from Jesus today is: The secret to have no fear

The message I got from Jesus today is a very practical message. There are so many unexpected crisis in our lives that could give us lots of fear. Sometimes, it is not easy to get rid of those fear.

But, John gives us a secret to get rid of all kinds of fear and darkness. It is 4:4, 'the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world'. Yes, if we really believe what John says then no one or nothing can steal our peace and security away. Because there is nothing on earth greater than the presence of God in us.

That's how I experienced a powerful presence of God and the peace inside me this Monday when I was in Burnaby Hospital lying on the bed for two hours waiting for the colonoscopy procedure, saying Psalm 23 many, many times.

May you learn this secret and be able to experience the powerful presence of God in you as often as you can.

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to know that you are greater than anyone or anything so that nothing can give us fear and doubt. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
