Bible Study

Today's passage is very special. Why? Because it is a passage that many preachers used to lead people to believe in Jesus. To many of those preachers, the question is about salvation, about going to heaven or hell. Well, in a deeper sense it is, but in a situational sense it is not. Because the jailer was not asking for eternal salvation at all.

Bishop N.T. Wright's says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright):
It was midnight; there had just been an earthquake; the prison he was in charge of had burst open; he was going to be held responsible for escaped prisoners, which would probably mean torture and death; he was on the point of committing suicide - and was he about to ask these strange visitors for a detailed exposition of Justification by grace through faith?...
It isn't the strictest word-for-word translation, but it catches the sense of the jailer's frantic question. 'Gentlemen, will you please tell me how I can get out of this mess?'...
The Christian worldview sees the entire mess that the world is in, from the global facts of human rebellion, idolatry and sin, the corruption of human life and relationships, the pollution of our planet, the worldwide systems of economic exploitation, and so on, right through to this messy situation here and now, this sudden crisis, this person in desperate need or sorrow or fear, and this person whose own deliberate sin has raised a dark barrier between themselves and God...That's why 'believe in the Lord Jesus' is always the answer to the question of how to be rescued, at whatever level and in whatever sense.

N.T. Wright. Acts for Everyone, Part 2. Louisville,KY:Westminster John Knox Press, 2008, p.66,67.

Are you in a mess right now? Do you know how to get out of your mess? Do you have some people who are in a mess? How can you get hold of that crisis to lead them to Jesus?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

What I heard from Jesus today is: How to get out of this mess?

What I got today from Jesus is a very practical method for us to get out of a messy situation:
1. Sing praises as much as you can.
2. Wait for Jesus to send his angels to help you.
3. Catch those moments to help other to get out of their mess and to lead them to Jesus.

Is that so simple? Yes, it is actually. Do you think you can do that next time you fall into a mess?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to be able to sing praises to you as often as we can so that we can be able to get out of a mess and to lead more people to believe in you.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
