Let us praise the Lord:
Lord my God, I cried to you for help,
    and you have healed me.
Lord, you have brought up my soul from Sheol;
    you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit.
                                                            Psalm 30:2-3
Today's Reading: Genesis 42:36-43:34

Bible Study

      This is another strange chapter. Joseph is playing more games with his brothers. Only God knows his real intention. Is it necessary? May be Genesis wants us to know something we can hardly think of.

Let's take a look at what Professor John Goldingay says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldingay) :

     Readers of Exodus are offended by the suggestion that the sins of parents are visited on their children to the third and fourth generation (Exodus 20), but one does not have to read the Bible to learn that it is so. Yet the Bible does provide one or two spectacular illustrations of how this works out, and Jacob is one of them.  The way Genesis tells the story, we cannot attribute all of Jacob's troubles to the way Isaac and Rebekah related to him and his brother, but neither can they be absolved of some of the responsibility. Jacob pays the penalty for who his parents were.  In turn, his sons pay the penalty for the person their father was.  They too became experts at deception and victims of deception.  And Jacob becomes the victim of their deception - both that of Joseph and that of his brothers.

      Do you have similar ties of sins in your family? How are you going to do about that?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

    The title I heard from Jesus today is: How to cut the tie of family sins

    What Jesus tells me today is another wake up call to all of us.  I don't know if you aware you have quite a number of weaknesses or sins of your parents. I aware of this quite some years ago when I started to have a closer relationship with Jesus. I always tell people, if your father is greedy, then you are greedy. If you father can't control his sexual desire, then you are going to have the same problem. If your mother likes to grumble, then you like to grumble…and so on. Have you got that?

    The reality is, usually we cannot cut this kind of family weakness or sins. Until you have Jesus opening your eyes. Until you are willing to ask Jesus to help you. And, until you determine to take action to cut that kind of sinful behaviour. That's what these two chapters is talking about. That's what Jesus wants to warn you about. You are facing with some sins that are not from you but deep down in you that you are not able to get rid of. Only Jesus!

     Kneel down now to pray to ask Jesus' help to restore you and transform you to be free from your family sins.

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to remove all those family sins from our lives so that we are free to serve you and to bear your own image.  In Jesus Name we pray. Amen.
