Bible Study

      We can see how contagious can someone's dark side be in this chapter. Jacob's deceitful character is like a kind of DNA in his sons character that nearly kill Joseph and destroy Jacob's whole family. 

Let's take a look at what Professor John Goldingay says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldingay) :

    

     It almost costs Joseph's life.  It gives his brothers a chance to show they have their father's genes: they are as good at deceit as he is.  Once again deceitfulness catches up with Jacob, who was sometimes beaten at his own game by his cousin and by his wife, and in his dotage is now beaten at it by his sons.

    The title I heard from Jesus today is: Your dark side might destroy your whole family

    What Jesus tells me today is to be very cautious about our dark side. Or, in a broader sense, to be aware of the genes, DNA and sinful nature of our ancestors.

    As in the passage of God giving the Ten Commandments, we need to know these three verses:

“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God,visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments."     Exodus 20: 4-7


    The sinful genes, DNA can carry forward to the third and the fourth generation. See how God used Joseph's character of righteousness to turn everything around to save and renew his whole family, including Jacob. Have you experienced God's salvation in this positive way? Or, on the contrary, everything is moving towards a negative way?

    Now, is your dark side destroying your whole family? Is the dark side of any of your friends destroying his/her family? How can you help them?
     
Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to be aware of our dark side so that we won't destroy our own family. Lead us to follow you each day that our family will be blessed. In Jesus Name we pray. Amen.
