Bible Study

There are lots of messages in todays passage. We may question about why Jacob blessed Ephraim with his right hand, putting the younger ahead of the elder. That is unusual because that is not what that society affirms, not even now, and God allows that to happen. We can think about the power of Jacob's blessing to the power of blessings. But, what attracts me is the last word of Jacob in this passage.

Jacob knows that he is going to die and he is ready to die. More than that, he uses that special moment to encourage and give assurance to his beloved son Joseph that God will be with him and his family in a special way. That is the most unusual and a very powerful scene.

What do you think you would do if your are about to die? Do you think you have the similar kind of faith that you are ready to really finish well and that God will bless your family?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

The title I heard from Jesus today is: What would you do when you are about to die?

What Jesus tells me today is a challenge to our true status of our faith.

For the past twenty-six years to be an Anglican priest I have seen too many death. I have seen quite a number of people who did finish well and die well. I have seen some people died in fear and made a big mess to their family when they died.

What Jesus tells us today through this passage is to invite us to prepare ourselves each day to follow Jacob's good example to die well and to finish well. Do you think you are able to do that? I don't think so, unless you have a true daily intimate personal relationship with Jesus. Your real relationship with Jesus will be revealed when that day comes!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Prepare our hearts each day so that we are able to finish well, die well and will be able to bless our family at that critical moment. In Jesus Name we pray. Amen.
