Do you know why Jesus said He is light of the world and light of life here in this passage? Is it about how He brought light to the sinful woman who lived in darkness in the previous passage? Yes, of course. But, there are more to that.
N.T. Wright gives a profound meaning to this passage. He says:
The idea of God calling someone to be the means of bringing light to the world is rooted in ancient Judaism. There, in the prophet Isaiah in particular, it is Israel who will be the world's true light. But, ultimately, it is the Lord's servant who is anointed to bring God's truth and justice to the world, and who at the climax of the book dies a cruel death to achieve the goal (Isaiah 42: 6; 49: 6; 53: 1-12; 60: 1,3). The claim to be the world's true light, like so much that Jesus says in this gospel, is not in itself a claim to be divine; it is a claim to be Israel's Messiah.
The highlights the problem which runs through the whole chapter. Israel was supposed to be the light of the world; but Israel was providing only darkness.
As disciples of Christ, we are called to be the light of the world too. Do you think we can be light of the world without the light of life in us?

What I heard from Jesus today is: Light of life!
There are so many people living in darkness in today's world. Lot's of time because of our own weakness we live in darkness also. What I got from Jesus today is that we'll never know whether we are really living in the light. We'll know that when "deep" darkness comes, somewhat like we got into big trouble and fear, then you'll know whether the light of life is in you, whether Jesus is in you! If He is in you and He is the light of life and the light of the world, then you can also be the light of the world giving light and hope to the others, even in your crisis!
So, do you have Jesus, light of life, in you today? Are you becoming more and more the light of the world because you follow Jesus daily that His light shine upon you daily!
Remember, your light can only comes from Jesus. The closer you are with Jesus, the brighter you will become!
Dear Lord Jesus, Light of Life,
Help us to be as close as we can be to you so that we can shine for you and bring your light to more people. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
