Bible Study

This passage gives us three things to think of:
1.  Paul's name from then on precedes Barnabas' name. It means that Paul became the main leader and Barnabas the second-chair.
2.  John Mark(the author of the Gospel of Mark) left them when they arrived at Perga. It seems that John Mark was not happy at that kind of change of importance so he left. And, Paul later described John's leaving as a kind of refusing Paul's leadership.
3.  Paul was able to preach a tailor-made sermon linking with the historical story of the Israelites to the present story of the coming of the Savior Jesus.

     N.T. Wright's says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright):
Paul is setting up a system of signposts, from David a thousand years before to John a mere 15 or so years earlier.  And all the signposts point to one person: Jesus the Messiah, the Rescuer.  Paul's strategy is a challenge to us all, to understand our audience well enough to know how to tell them the story in a way they will find compelling, how to set up signposts in a language they can read.

N.T. Wright. Acts for Everyone, Part 2. Louisville,KY:Westminster John Knox Press, 2008, p.12.

Can you feel what Paul was facing? He got the faith and courage to lead as the main leader and his mentor Barnabas became the second-chair.  Paul had to deal with the hurt of John Mark and the anger he had of being deserted or even betrayed by John Mark.  In all those pressure he still could have that wonderful tailor-made signposts to tell his love story.

What have you got from Jesus today?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

What I heard from Jesus today is: Tailor-made signposts for your love story

I am being invited by Rev. Edmund Ho, the Rector of Toronto Emmanuel Church, to have a talk on how to spread the Gospel in Toronto next Monday. I am so thankful to the Lord for giving me quite a lot of insight in today's passage:
1.  We need to have the courage following Paul's good example to lead if we are the person God prepares to lead other people. Don't belittle yourself! You can do it!

2.  You need to be able to face those opposition or even betrayal. It just happens and you can't avoid it. The only thing you need to do is to focus on Jesus.

3.  You need to be able and be willing to receive those tailor-made signposts from Jesus that you can tell your love story so that your message won't be irreverent or disconnected.

Can you do that? No, you can't. You need to ask Jesus so that you can do it and to be filled with the Holy Spirit that you are able to do it.

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to be able to focus in you so that we can be able to receive those tailor-made signposts from you that we can tell our love story to the others. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
