Bible Study

     In the previous chapters, Paul deals with the problem of division and human pride in the Church of Corinth. Starting from this chapter, Paul deals with another problem, the scandalous behaviour of sex. Especially he heard someone was sleeping with his father's wife, his own step-mother. Satan has only three main areas to destroy a person and that is money, power and sex. Though the previous chapters only talks about "power" which involves division and human pride. But, when power is involved, usually money is also involved. Sex is another matter. It is perhaps the worst of all three. What can the church do about this sin when it happens is the point Paul wants to bring out. 
Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
     This has nothing to do with going back on 'justification by faith'.  As will become clear over the next two chapters, Paul knows that the fellowship of all who believe in Jesus as Messiah and Lord can be badly damaged by behaviour which does not acknowledge him as such.  In the present case, the offender will still be saved, but, like the person who has 'built' with the wrong material in 3:10-15, this 'salvation', which will be given 'on the day of the Lord', will only be accomplished the other side of judgment on the present behaviour.  And, since this behaviour is threatening the very life and witness of the church, this judgment must be exercised through appropriate discipline, namely, ejection from the community.

      What extend do you think your church can exercise its authority when serious problem of sex happens? How can today's message be a warning to us that Satan is going to get you using sex? How can you protect yourself from Satan's attack in this area?

    What I heard from Jesus today is: Sex, watch out! Satan is coming to get you using sex!

    What I got from Jesus today is a warning to each one of us. It is so easy to talk about the danger of money, power and sex. But, when Satan uses any on that three or all three to attack someone, there is nowhere to hide. That would be the time to test where Jesus is Lord or not. When we fail, then we are going to be lorded by Satan through money, power or sex, or money, power and sex. How can you deal with that? Are you sure you are immune from that? How so?

     Another problem we need to think of today is how your church should deal with this problem. Is you church ready to expel someone if such kind of sin happens? I know that a church in Vancouver expelled one of their pastors just half a year ago because of outside marriage sex with two women. The whole church has been suffering a lot from this tragedy! So, be very careful, your sin can cause the destruction of your church and community. Watch out! 

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to be able to come close to you each day as our Lord, Saviour and King so that we are being protected.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
